I started blogging a year ago (October 2018) and that (as well as the 52-hike challenge) inspired me to start keeping track of my hikes. My definition of “hike” has changed a lot this year. Forest Service, which is the only other property owner along Backbone Road, apparently is interested in purchasing much of the property.Ĭounty officials said the best chance for the public to have access to the property again would be for the Forest Service to make that purchase and possibly maintain and improve the crumbling road.Keyhole & Wild Loop | Devil’s Backbone Open Space The Windmiller family owns some 600 acres in the Backbone area. “No telling what they’re doing down there,” he said. Herron said some individuals and parties had trespassed on the 67-acre Windmiller property at the bottom of the road. “You’ve got high school kids going down there to party, which I’d like to stop,” Herron told commissioners Monday. Neighboring property owner Bill Herron, whose farm is located on the east and west sides of Backbone Road at Englewood Road, said he had no objection to closing the road south of his property. The bridge is less than a quarter-mile from where a 53-year-old Columbia man, Randal Fennewald, died from a fall in October 2014 on the Callaway County side of the creek. Shawver and Miller both said the road closure would help minimize the county’s liability in the event someone was injured at the old bridge or along the road. Resource Management Director Stan Shawver said closing the road and allowing the Windmillers to put up a gate at the spot where the county road maintenance ends would “keep out folks who don’t need to be there.” The Windmillers own the only home on the southernmost stretch of the road. Southern District Commissioner Karen Miller received a request to close the road a few months ago. The Cedar Creek bridge, reportedly constructed in 1892, still spans the creek from Boone to Callaway county, but the bridge decking and most of the iron supports are missing. The creek winds in an oxbow around the southern portion of the area. “It’s a heckuva drop,” Sapp said, noting that the area also had a rich history and was once the site of Duley’s Mill on Cedar Creek and a 19th-century engineering marvel: a tunnel drilled through the limestone bluff at the base of the Backbone to provide stronger water flow for the mill. He said the Pinnacles area north of Columbia is the only place with similar geography in Boone County.īut the road along the panoramic Backbone, referred to as “Boone County’s Grand Canyon” in some historical accounts, has nearly vertical drops of 150 to 200 feet along its west side. “So few people know about it,” said David Sapp, Boone County historian and longtime member and officer of the Boone County Historical Society. Commissioners will vote on whether to close the stretch of road at a regular meeting Thursday or Tuesday. The county has not maintained the steep, rocky, section of Backbone Road for several years. The Boone County Commission has received a request from property owner Eugene Windmiller to close the southernmost roughly 800-foot portion of Backbone Road, about 1½ miles south of Englewood Road and 4 miles southeast of Columbia Regional Airport. One of Boone County’s most scenic areas, a popular party spot at the end of an increasingly treacherous road along the aptly named Devil’s Backbone, will soon be off-limits to the public.

“It’s very exciting to be a part of a movement that’s creating something that’s never been made before,” he said. It is a point of pride for him that he developed all of the steps and recipes himself, and wouldn’t have had it any other way. “It is our best product and the most challenging to make,” he said. Soft Ripened is Prevot’s favorite cheese. It will continue to age on the grocery store shelf. From here, the cheese will need about three more days in the aging room before being cooled and packaged. Just three days later, the fungi have blossomed into a full bloomy rind. It is then pasteurized and later inoculated with Brown’s cultures and enzymes There, the team grinds up the almonds and mixes the milk to exact specifications. As Prevot told us on our tour, the only room in the factory that you wouldn’t see in a traditional creamery is the almond-milk room. Originally, Kite Hill made its cheeses from a blend of almond and macadamia nut milks, but have since shed the Hawaiian nut from the ingredient list.Įach Kite Hill cheese is made using traditional techniques. Kite Hill launched in 2013 with a line of three cheeses - the Soft Fresh and Soft Ripened that are still on the shelf, as well as a semi-firm Havarti-like cheese that is no longer available. Prevot designed Kite Hill’s cheese-making facilities and brought the operations to scale. Once Brown and Casino had figured out the basics, they hired Jean Prevot, formerly of Laura Chenel Chèvre. Here, he is pictured next to almond milk pasteurization tanks. The trio knew that they wanted to make cheese from nut milk just as it is made from dairy milk - this idea is a departure from most of the plant-based cheeses on the market today, which are made from nut paste. So he teamed up with Patrick Brown, a biochemist at Stanford, and Monte Casino, then a cheese-making instructor at Le Cordon Bleu in Boston, to rethink non-dairy cheese from the ground up. However he was unable to find any non-dairy cheese that he enjoyed eating. Los Angeles chef Tal Ronnen, who has cooked for the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres, had long been preparing plant-based meals. Today, Kite is selling its individual cheeses nationally through an exclusive contract with Whole Foods and is providing non-dairy cheese to the grocer’s deli counter.īut just a few years ago, Kite Hill was a pipe dream in a bio lab. But the company is poised for rapid expansion. The building still has a start-up feel there’s plenty of office space and not many employees, and the creamery has room to grow. The Kite Hill offices and production facilities are located in a nondescript office park less than a mile from the Bay. The Kite Hill artisanal cheese trio includes (from top): Soft Fresh Soft Fresh Truffle, Dill, and Chive and Soft Ripened. Nosh took a tour of Kite Hill’s creamery to learn more about what distinguishes its product, and, of course, to have a taste of the cheese itself. Kite Hill is currently producing a line of six cheeses, all made from almond milk. There’s a ricotta, two flavors of cream cheese (plain and chive), and three “artisanal” cheeses: two chèvre-like Soft Fresh cheeses (plain and truffle-dill-chive) and one Soft Ripened cheese with a soft bloomy rind, a la Brie or Camembert. (The other is the Fairfax-based Miyoko’s Kitchen.) Two pioneering non-dairy cheese companies are headquartered in the Bay Area, one of which, Kite Hill, is in Hayward. An abundance of non-dairy products have emerged that make use of far more flavorful ingredients like cashews, coconuts and almonds. It wasn’t exactly delicious, but it was dairy-free. At the cafeteria salad bar, there was a giant tub of Tofutti, ready for slathering over bagels and 9-grain toast. The last time I ate dairy-free cheese, I was in college and experimenting with a vegan diet. The “Soft Ripened,” pictured above, is coated in the same penicillium fungi used to make Brie and Camembert and aged for 10-15 days. Where the industry is concerned, in my opinion, we have been due for a reckoning for a while now. Now, Armani wrote, “I simply and sincerely hope that we will learn from this experience and that we will use it as an opportunity to rethink and reset. And maybe it was all the silk and slo-mo, but it was somehow incredibly zen. Languid dresses looked mercurial, an effect echoed in outfits of separates in textures silky, shiny, and shimmery. For evening, suits were sharpened and sculpted. Slouchy pajama-like silhouettes evoked the comfort-wear adopted from quarantine. Voluminous shapes were adorned in chilly coral-like surface decoration, sumptuous and muted all at once. On the women’s as well as the men’s side, daywear was soft, casual, crinkled: democratic tailoring, if you will. Instead it has been, and remains, all about creating a timeless elegance that brings out the character of the wearer. Giorgio Armani has never been about dressing up (or down for that matter) in any conventional sense. “And if anything, her desire for beauty has been sharpened by the experience of having so much beauty denied to her through having her movement and activities limited. “She is still concerned with looking good and feeling comfortable and confident,” Armani wrote of his post-lockdown woman. He has lived through war and built an empire that he is not about to abandon. But this was his point: Armani is too much of a veteran to let a pandemic faze him. “I continued to wake up early, do some exercise, have breakfast, read the papers, and then I’d go through some emails,” went just a couple of lines from the complete account, too brilliantly extensive to publish in full. The designer spent lockdown observing a typically regimented daily routine, which he detailed in his email. “I suspect, as someone who has lived a life and had a great deal of experience, I have probably developed a sense of when things are genuinely serious and need a response,” the 86-year-old wrote in an email before this evening’s broadcast, which opened with a short film narrated by the Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino revisiting Armani’s all-time most “timeless” moments. The designer and national treasure chose to broadcast his mainline show on the Italian TV network La7 as a gesture-no doubt-of rebooting an industry bruised by the pandemic.Īrmani was the first designer to cancel attendance for a fashion show when COVID-19 hit Milan in February 2020. But in a season when brands have largely had to rely on live-streams, Giorgio Armani opened his arms to the public a little bit wider. Does fashion make the people come together? For a business knocked for its supposed elitism, it’s a bold question. To have a singer of her calibre compliment a song that I wrote, was a huge, huge moment for me. "It was one of the only times I thought, 'I could die right now,' - because it wasn't about, 'oh you sang that really well,' but she liked the song. After thanking me for participating near the end of the tour, she leaned in and hugged me and said into my ear, 'Damn, I love this song.' She takes the mic and introduces me, and the crowd is cheering. "That was a full circle moment for me," recalled Marshall. But when our conversation turned to her hit "If I Didn't Have You," from "Tuesday's Child," Marshall says that the song provided one of her biggest career highlights when she toured Europe with Whitney Houston in 1999. In the past, Marshall has opened for everyone from Jeff Healey to Simply Red. Marshall says she loves the new album because "it's the record to me that sounds like me, but now." “There was such a swagger and such coolness to her writing, that it made me re-evaluate the tone of the rest of the record.” It was co-written by Marsha Ambrosius, one-half of Floetry, an R&B duo out of the UK in the early '00s. On "Heavy Lifting," Marshall’s soulful alto sounds more mature and confident, and there's enough playful attitude being flung about in such songs as "Dawgcatcher," the upbeat "God Forbid" and the funky bounce of "I'm Not Drunk" that she sounds like she's having the time of her life.Īnd it is her life, as the entire album was co-written and produced by Marshall and her life partner and bass player Rob Misener with the exception of "I Hope She Cheats," the first single off the record.
